PROGRAMME UPDATED APRIL 2008

WSGS meetings are held on the third Friday of each month at 7.30pm (no meeting in July and August) at St. Stephen's Church, Angola Road, Worthing. Although every effort is made to notify of any changes, members are advised to confirm field trips and lectures at least one week in advance.  Details and further information from the Chairman, Ken Steel (01903-209140 or email).

  • Fri 17 October 2008 - Lecture: What's new in the Weald - recent discoveries. Peter Austen.
  • Fri 21 November 2008 - Lecture: Meteorites - Myth and Marvel. Dr Caroline Smith.
  • Fri 21 December 2008 - Members Christmas meeting & talk : A field trip to Frankfurt, Messel & Nierstein (Germany). David Bone.
  • Fri 16 January 2009 - Lecture: The early occupation of Brtain. Prof. Chris Stringer.

FIELD TRIPS

Please register your interest in any field trip as soon as possible. Further details from John Lonergan (Field Trip Secretary) on 01903 440432. Trips with insufficient advance interest may be cancelled. Members are advised to confirm field trips at least one week in advance.

The Geologists' Association holds a combined Ancillary Policy with Zurich Municipal Insurance Company through which WSGS members are insured.  On any field trip you are required to wear helmets and high visibility tabards in quarries. This is always advised.  Goggles must be worn when hammering and suitable footwear be worn at all times.
  • Annual Early May Bank Holiday Field Trip, 2 - 6 May 2008. Destination – Guernsey with Paul Olver as leader.
  • Fri 4 / Sat 5 April 2008 - Local Heroes: Frederick Dixon. There will be an exhibition in Worthing Library 31 March to 12 April; a lecture by Tony Brook in the Worthing Library Theatre on 4 April, 7.30pm to 9.30pm; and a Field Trip led by David Bone on 5 April to the Trundle near Chichester and Bracklesham Bay.
  • Sun 18 May 2008 - Brighton Rocks / Brighton Building Stones walk led by Stewart Ullyot. Start at Brighton Pavilion north gatehouse at 10.30.
  • Sun 29 June 2008 - Annual Downland Walk No. 6: Washington Wind Gap. Led by Tony Brook. Meet at the car park by the A24 south of Washington at 1030. Finish at 3.00-4.00 pm with lunch at the Frankland Arms PH.
  • Sat 5 / Sun 6 July 2008 - A weekend mapping the Chalk with Rory Mortimore. Saturday: around Devil's Dyke to Seddlescombe, Pyecombe & Fulking. Sunday: around Mount Caburn to Lewes area. On Saturday, meet at the smaller car park down the Devils Dyke to Saddlescombe Road (TQ 268112) at 10.00. Picnic lunch and walking boots required. Booking required - contact John Lonergan.
  • Sun 12 October 2008 (joint meeting with Geologists' Association) - Field trip/afternoon walk to Mantell's Quarry, at Whiteman's Green near Cuckfield. Led by Tony Brook and Peter Tandy (Natural History Museum). £5 charge, suitable footwear advised.
  • Sun 12 October 2008 - Geological walk along the foreshore from Pett Level to Fairlight (includes dinosaur footprints). Led by Ken Brooks, Hastings & District Geological Society. Meet at the Smugglers PH at 11.00; bring a packed lunch.
